Do I need experience?

No, as an adventure school our primary focus is to teach all aspects of backcountry travel and all technical skills associated with each activity. We also spend time learning about geology, flora and fauna, local history and native people, and other topics related to the areas through which we travel.

How safe are the trips?

Student safety is our top priority. To ensure our high standard of safety, we set the student to instructor ratio low, with each trip consisting of a maximum of 10 adventurers and a minimum of 2 leaders. In addition, we always employ additional experienced and professional guides to assist Pangaea Quest leaders with the technical, specialized portions of each trip. These criteria allow us to provide for greater individualized attention and instruction for each student and may bring the student to instructor ratio as low as 2:1. There is, however, an element of risk present when engaging in adventure activities. We strive to keep this risk to a minimum by teaching awareness, proper technical skills, and by tackling each activity at a comfortable pace.

Where do we sleep?

Weather permitting, students may choose to sleep under the stars or share a tent with another student of the same gender.

What do we eat?

Adventurers are required to assist with the planning, selection and preparation of fresh and nutritious meals. Previous meals have included: blueberry pancakes, bagel sandwiches, peanut butter pasta, calzones, and chocolate brownies for dessert.

What kind of equipment will I need?

Students will need to provide most of their own personal equipment, such as clothing, sleeping bag, backpack, boots, rain gear, camera, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. A detailed list of required clothing and equipment is included with the enrollment packet. Pangaea Quest provides all group equipment, such as tents, cooking supplies, and a comprehensive first aid kit.

Will I be able to communicate with my family and friends?

Yes, each student will be supplied with a list of mail stops where mail will be picked up during the course. Students will also have the opportunity to call home at various times throughout the course.
